Autumn 2020

For this term, our history topic is the Victorians.  We will be learning about the Victorian era and considering why it was a significant turning point in British history.  As part of our topic, we are hoping to have the opportunity to visit Preston Manor and be interviewed for different jobs in a Victorian household.

Our core text for the first half-term will be ‘Street Child’.  This book links well with our history topic, being set in the Victorian era.  We will continue to apply the ‘Power of Reading’ approach to this text, using a range of cross-curricular links such as history and drama to explore characters and story.

After half term, our new book will be ‘Moon Man’.  We will be learning about space and exploring the lunar cycle, which is also part of the text. We are hoping to go on an exciting trip to Herstmonceux, where children will have the opportunity to explore an observatory and take part in a wide variety of ‘hands on’ scientific activities.

We look forward to a great start to Year 4.

Spring 2021

This Spring, Year 4 are studying the Anglo-Saxons.  They will design, create and evaluate their very own shields based on their historical research.  They will also learn about the Anglo-Saxon invasions, settlements and kingdoms: place names and village life.

In science, we will finish our learning all about electricity!  We will be constructing a range of electrical circuits which include batteries, wires, bulbs, switches and buzzers. We will also be learning about states of matter. We will explore solids, liquids and gases in depth using drama and practical experiments.

Our ‘Power of Reading’ texts this term will be ‘Varjak Paw’ and ‘Iron Man’.  These amazing texts will allow us to explore a wide range of writing styles and continue to promote our love for reading.

We are looking forward to all of our exciting learning which will take place.

Summer 2021

For a super start to our Summer term, children will be learning about the Rainforest. They will be designing, making and evaluating their very own pop-up book to support their learning about rainforests around the world. This links well with our ‘Power of Reading’ text - ‘Journey to the River Sea’.

In History, children will be learning about the Viking and Anglo-Saxon struggle for the Kingdom of England to the time of Edward the Confessor.  They will be able to develop their subject knowledge on the Anglo-Saxons and make connections in their learning. They will learn about Anglo-Saxon laws and justice, Viking raids and invasions, resistance by Alfred the Great and Athelstan the first king of England.

This term we will be taking some of our learning outdoors.  We have a fantastic trip organised to Hindleap Warren. Children will be taking part in a range of woodland activities which will develop their team building skills, such as star orienteering.

During this term, children will also be spending some time preparing for the famous ‘Copthorne Junior Storytelling Competition’. We will be learning lots of tips and tricks along the way to really help bring our stories to life.

We cannot wait to get started!
