Charlotte's Web - Character Study
HOME LEARNING - SUMMER TERM WEEK 2- WRITING TASK
This week we will be starting work on our new class book. Don't worry if you haven't got a copy of the book at home, Miss Manley will be recording a narration of the chapters so you can listen to this to help you- she'll even try and do some of her silly character voices! Like last week, we suggest that this work is spread over THREE sessions.
SESSION 1- WHAT ARE YOU LIKE/ FERN CHARACTER STUDY
Before you listen to Chapter 1, have a think about how you would describe yourself to someone who didn't know you. Would you say you were kind, friendly, sporty? Would you say you were funny, honest but sometimes a bit mean? These are called personality traits or characteristics. Draw a picture of yourself (or use the template below) and write down all the character traits both good and bad around it. You could even ask your parents- do they agree with any of these, what do they think you are like? You could even add these in a different colour.
When you've done that draw a picture of Fern or use the template in the resources below. Then listen to Chapter 1. What is Fern like in this chapter? What are your first impressions of her? Write down all your ideas around the picture of her in one colour.
SESSION 2- CHAPTER 2
You will need your work from Session 1.
Now you should have some ideas about what Fern is like as a person so far in our story. Have a listen to Chapter 2. At the end of this chapter does your opinion of Fern change now that we've got to know her more? Are there any other traits that you can add? Do these in a different colour on your work from Session 1.
Once you've finished this, choose your favourite traits and explain why you think Fern is like this using 'I think...because'. Don't forget, the best answers use things that have happened in the story to support their answers- not something that's made up!
SESSION 3- WILBUR
Now that we've looked at Fern closely, we can start to think about Wilbur. Listen again to Chapters 1 and 2 if you need to and think about the following questions:
- What is Wilbur's personality like?
- What does he look like?
- How might he be feeling?
Write your answers down using 'I think...because' to support your ideas with evidence from the text.
Below are some resources that can help you with each session.
Don't forget, if you want any extra help or support with this, send your teacher an email.
